WELCOME ALL!
(JT Bates is a Twin Cities based drummer/producer/teacher)

Hey all. thanks so much for being on the internet.

I love to hear from people, so please hit me up about recording projects, shows, lessons, etc!

The LATEST things:

Just returned from Berlin and PEOPLE fest.  what an amazing experience.  Played with Big Red Machine, Jenny Lewis, Bonny Light Horseman, and LULUC (that was with new drum friend Jason Treuting of So Percussion as well)
an overwhelming yet reaffirming situation with over 200 artists collaborating in multiple rooms in the same building for a week straight!  Look for some live recordings to start appearing on the People player soon!

Now back in the Twin Cities for the rest of the year for the most part.  Working on records, playing some shows, teaching some lessons, hanging with my family!
hope to see you out and about!

Bon Iver & TUDance

little while back got to be a a part of this show with Bon Iver & TUDance.  We did three nights at The Palace Theater in Saint Paul MN, right down the street from my house.  Truly amazing experience on so many levels.  There are videos floating around if you're so inclined.  Here's one excerpt I really dig.  Tiny little chopstick drums.  An amazing band to be a part of with Justin, BJ Burton, and Mike Lewis.

just got back from a real fun tour with Hiss Golden Messenger..we played at Nola Jazz & Heritage fest, we did a bunch of dates with the amazing Trampled by Turtles(also my dear friends!) and we ended up at Red Rocks Amphitheater at the end.  so fun.  here's us in Asheville NC

*new live dates added to the calendar.  heading out next week to begin working on a Bon Iver project for Liquid Music Series featuing TU Dance. we will be workshopping for much of March, and then performing in April at the beautiful Palace Theater in St. Paul MN

*2/15/18 Just returned from upstate NY working on a new side project of a couple of pretty neat fellas.  Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner have been working on some tracks for a while and invited me to play drums on the project.  Really creative fun record to work on, i'll keep updating details on news of this project!

Also very very excited to say that i'll be joining Hiss Golden Messenger and Phil Cook on tour starting in May! It will be my first time playing New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival among some other really amazing gigs. We will be out in support of my dear old friends Trampled by Turtles.

*1/7/17 So happy to have this recording out in the world! With Todd Clouser and John Medeski.  From a show at my home base Icehouse last summer.  Features Todd's tunes and a lot of improvisations.  Please check it out !

*1/7/17 Working on a new Phil Cook and the Guitarheels record out in Wisconsin.  Very great honor and pleasure to make a recording with this band.  more on that soon

*recorded a bunch of drums for the upcoming Mouse on Mars record, some during Eaux Claires fest, and a bit more just last week.  Looking forward to hearing what they've done to me.

*Gearing up for a winter of teaching lessons at Tackle Instrument Supply Co...please contact me if you or someone you know is interested! Click the contact link above and send me a message!
